DEBUG Discourse
Shaping the Image of a VR Installation against Racism

In 2022, DEBUG exhibited at re:publica 22. The VR experience simulates the lived reality and discomfort of racial microaggressions. "Microaggressions are like mosquito bites." as some people describe the gradual impact on their mental health.

Designed by Darío Morazán together with the MXLab at KISD, the VR journey involved the audio-visual disturbance from racist mosquitoes. As participants virtually traversed through the landscape of active reflection, they move away from the land of ignorant bliss.

At some point, mosquitoes swarm as they buzz out microaggressions. The reality of racism starts to become noticeable. Through the installation, VR was used as a tool to amplify the discomfort and initiate the discourse around microaggressions.

As art director in the project, I conveyed the mosquito metaphor through words and imagery. Aside from designing and documenting the image and imagery of DEBUG, my one-on-one interactions with people from all backgrounds helped in the ongoing collective effort against racism.

DEBUG is available for interventions and workshops on anti-racism:
